Dance/NYC Junior Committee Application
Who We Are
The Dance/NYC Junior Committee (JComm) is a proactive working committee of emerging leaders in the field. As a project of Dance/NYC, we initiate significant projects in research, advocacy, and career development while strengthening each member’s relationship to the dance community. JComm is an incubator for the next generation of dance leadership and serves as a catalyst for innovation and invention in the dance field. We generate ideas through dialogue and we move those ideas into action.
Serving a Multicultural City
JComm comprises up to 20 members, ages 21-30,* who represent various roles within the NYC dance community. In order to more effectively represent our peer group we are working to reflect our multicultural city within our own membership. We believe diverse perspectives are necessary to prepare a new generation of dance leadership for the difficult challenges facing the field. During our 2014-15 recruitment season we are actively seeking applicants who are dedicated to moving the issue of race equity in dance from an ideological discussion into action. People of color are encouraged to apply.
Your Time Commitment
The term of service runs from July 1, 2014 through July 8, 2015, and the full committee meets from 6:30pm to 8:30pm every first Tuesday of each month (schedule modifications are made when these dates fall on holidays). The meetings typically take place at Dance/NYC’s office at 218 East 18th Street (between 2nd and 3rd avenues).
New members are also required to attend two summer work sessions, taking place August 4th and 5th from 6-9pm.
In addition to monthly meetings, JComm members are required to select one subcommittee on which to serve throughout the year. Past subcommittees have focused on topics such as advocacy, diversity, and healthcare as determined by the full committee at the outset of the year. Subcommittees meet once per month.
Members may also be nominated to serve on one of two small steering committees. These committees also meet once per month and focus on committee structure or research.
Sample Monthly Commitment
2-hour full committee meeting
2-hour think tank meeting
2-hour planning committee (Census or Blueprint) meeting, if applicable
4-6 hours of reading, planning, blogging, preparing presentations and attending or volunteering at associated events such as the Dance/NYC Symposium, the Bessies, and Town Halls
On average there is a commitment of 12 hours of volunteer work per month.
Why You Should Apply
Junior Committee members past and present have cited their years on the committee as inspiring as well beneficial — both personally and professionally. Here are just a few of the many highlights of service:
- Opportunities to present and facilitate panels or discussions at events such as the Dance/NYC Symposium, City Council hearings, and Junior Committee Town Halls.
- Participating in candid and stimulating discussions that move the dance field forward.
- Becoming a part of a networked group willing to share skills, resources, experience and contacts with one another.
* Please note: JComm does not accept applications from candidates who will be undergraduate students during their year on the Committee. If you are graduating in May, you are welcome to apply. JComm also does not accept applications from candidates who will turn 31 during their year of service.
Applications will be accepted through May 16, 2014 for the coming year.
Finalists will be notified and interviewed in the following weeks, and acceptances will be made by late June. Those who are selected will attend an orientation welcome session shortly thereafter. The new committee will meet for summer planning sessions on 8/4 and 8/5 and will convene for its first meeting of the year in August.
If you have questions about the application process, please contact committee members Brighid Greene at email@example.com and Mercedes Searer at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thank you for your interest, and we’ll be in touch with you!
